Michael Merenda: Listen

Alone on the Homestead

(The Mammals -from the album 'Departure')
Alone on the Homestead
by Michael Merenda

I was the oldest in a family with four kids
Don’t have much faith in anyone anymore

The war took my brothers, the war took my dad
War took my husband, everything I had

Alone on the Homestead
With the bones of the fallen dead

The enemy was faceless, the country was scared
The government impatient, the boys were unprepared

Most families got their boys back in only body bags
The papers wouldn’t even print coffins draped with flags

Alone on the Homestead
With the bones of the fallen dead

Casualties were so high no one could afford
Coffins draped with flags for the fallen of this war

And when the war is over and too many have bled
I doubt I’ll feel much safer alone on my homestead

Alone on the Homestead
With the bones of the fallen dead

I was the oldest in a family with four kids
Don’t have much faith in anyone anymore

The war took my brothers, the war took my dad
War took my husband, everything I had
